E. T. Seton Park Naturalization Plan

City of Toronto, Toronto, 2002

Site analysis and preparation of a naturalization plan of a disturbed area of the park including a wet meadow and a slope valley system along the Don River. Issues addressed by the naturalization plan design included areas impacted from invasive plant species (dog strangling vine, Siberian elm), steep slopes, and impacts from public uses (creation of informal trails, mountain biking). The mitigation design incorporates our knowledge of preferred habitats of native species and the local native flora..

Canada Centre for Inland Waters Landscape Revitalization Master Plan

Environment Canada, Burlington, 2002-2004

Aboud & Asscociates was retained to provide a Landscape Revitalization Master Plan of this federal government facility. Surveys were utilized to identify the opinions, attitudes and values of the client and personnel. Working sessions with the steering committee identified the intent, goals, concepts and ideas of the landscape master plan.

The purpose of the master plan study was to develop more dynamic and diverse landscape on the facility grounds including a prominent and higher profile entrance, more environmentally-friendly landscape, decreased maintenance, increased species diversity and naturalization, and improved site amenities for  users including staff, visitors and dignitaries.

The master plan identified low, moderate and high profile/visibility areas with associated levels of maintenance and graphical concepts to illustrate intent of the design element. See Urban Forestry  for additional services provided.

Playground Learning Environment Project

Toronto District School Board, Toronto,  2001-2006

Our firm is experienced in the theory and practice of schoolyard master planning and understands the issues and constraints facing schools. Since 1993, Steven Aboud has delivered many teacher-training workshops across southwestern Ontario. The hands-on workshops followed the concepts and techniques presented in the resource manual, ‘A Life Zone Approach to School Yard Naturalization: The Carolinian Life Zone’, of which Steven Aboud was a coauthor. Many of the principles from the workshops and manual were applied to the following schools:

Develop Master Plans of Cassandra Public School, and Elmbank, North Kipling and Islington Junior Middle Schools in association with Melillo Architects Inc.

Playground designs, with construction drawings, were created for day-care centres at the following schools: Cassandra, Victoria Village, Vincent Massey, Flemington Road and George R. Gauld Junior Public Schools, City Adult Learning Centre, and Parkdale Collegiate Institute.

Develop Master Plans and construction drawings of Warden Avenue Public School, Humber Valley Village Junior Middle School (with Roth and Associates), and George R. Gauld Junior Public School.

Our Lady of Victory School

Our Lady of Victory School, Milton, 2000-2002

First-hand experiences in nature afford children and adults with an opportunity to learn about the local flora and fauna, and to understand the interrelationships with their surroundings, as well as, the importance of environmental stewardship.

Through a school initiative Aboud & Asscoiates prepared a conceptual naturalization plan, a wetland layout/grading plan, and detailed planting plan for a schoolyard naturalization project. Aboud & Associates also supervised and coordinated the construction of the project’s landscapes.

A. M. Cunningham Public School

A. M. Cunningham Public School, Hamilton 1999-2002

Schoolyards can be effective facilities that promote the learning and development opportunities of children. At Aboud & Associates, our approach is to work with the school’s representative(s) or design committee (teachers, principal, custodians, parents, students) to generate ideas, identify opportunities and constraints, and apply a set of design principles to develop a master plan of the schoolyard. These principles often include sheltered and natural spaces for diverse types of play, meeting, learning and teaching. These principles were applied when Aboud & Associates prepared a Landscape Master Plan and detailed designs at A.M. Cunningham Public School in downtown Hamilton.

Landscape elements including: shade trees, shrubs thickets, tallgrass prairie meadow, an outdoor classroom, and a trail system to access the classroom and encourage other site users to “walk the trail”. The planting design facilitated outdoor natural history interpretation through group plantings and the outdoor classroom is a well-used resource for studies in several subject areas by teachers, as well as a meeting area for the local community.
